State Enterprise “The Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology” of the Committee of Science, Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan (CS MES RK).
The subject and purpose of the Institute is the development and implementation of fundamental academic research in the field of historical sciences, ethnology (ethnography) and anthropology. The Institute gives scientific explanations to the state bodies on the history and culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan, issues analytical references, letters of recommendation to the Office of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, ministries of the Republic of Kazakhstan, universities, akimats of different levels, museums, the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan, NCC, NGOs, embassies of foreign countries, foreign organizations accredited in Kazakhstan, foreign academic community, private commercial organizations, and citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
On the basis of the Institute, the pre-diploma practice of the second year master’s students from the Kazakhstani educational institutions is conducted (the specialties – ethnography, medieval period, new and modern history of Kazakhstan).
Most of the Institute’s scholars are the authors of history textbooks for schools, universities. They read lectures; serve as the research supervisors of PhD students, the reviewers of textbooks, teaching and methodological aids, as well as the chairmen of the SAC.
The Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology was organized in 1945 on the basis of the Institute of History, Language and Literature of the Kazakh Branch of the USSR Academy of Science. In 1991, in connection with the separation of the A.Kh. Margulan Institute of Archeology it was reorganized into the Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology. The Institute is the leading research center of the historical science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The main content of its activity is a deep comprehensive development of fundamental research in the field of history, anthropology and ethnology of the Kazakh people. The topical issues of historiography, historical demography, the history of culture and science, and ethno-sociology are also being studied.
The results of research activity are reflected in numerous fundamental studies, monographs, collections of articles, conference materials, and documentary publications. The Institute participated in the publication of legislative acts drafts, in the development of conceptual documents, in particular, the concept of the formation of a new historical consciousness of the peoples of Kazakhstan. The issues related to the formation of the Kazakh nationality and statehood, the place of the Kazakh state in the system of Central Asian countries were reflected in the collective monographs “Kazakhstan in the Era of Feudalism” “Kazakhstan, Middle and Central Asia in the XVI-early XIX century”, “Ablay and Kenessary”, “Essays on the History of Medieval Uighurs, Jalairs, Naimans and Kereits”, etc. General studies on the issues of the agrarian policy of tsarism in Kazakhstan, the history of Alash-Orda, the revolution of 1917, history of the working class, peasantry, intelligentsia, the socio-economic aspects of the functioning and transformation of the traditional structure of Kazakhstan, the history of forced collectivization, and the republic’s history during the Great Patriotic War were made by the Institute.
In 1993-1994 the essay “History of Kazakhstan from Ancient Times to the Present Day” was published in Kazakh and Russian. This is the first generalizing study on the history of Kazakhstan in the post-Soviet period. Ethnographic subjects are presented in the capital edition of A.Kh. Margulan on the Kazakh folk art in the works “The Kazakhs”, “Ethnic Territory of the Kazakhs in the XVIII-early XX century”, etc. The Institute has determined the long-term program of fundamental research “The Republic of Kazakhstan: History and Present”. Researching the actual problems of the past, the Institute has achieved certain results in the development of issues related to the ethnic history of Kazakhs, the reconstruction of Kazakh society in the Middle Ages and Modern Times, the struggle of the Kazakh people for national independence, the formation of national state, the development of Kazakhstan in the totalitarian system, etc.
The priority research directions of the Institute are the following: matters of ethnogenesis and ethnic history of the Kazakhs; topical issues of the methodology and historiography of Kazakhstan; issues of the history of national statehood and national security; Kipchak studies; topical socio-political and economic issues of the history of Kazakhstan in the XX century. A major contribution in the development of research in the field of history, archeology, ethnography, and in the formation of research personnel was made by Academicians of the Academy of Science of the KazSSR M.O. Auezov, A.Kh. Margulan, A.N. Nussupbekov, S.N. Pokrovskiy, R.B. Suleimenov, S.V. Yushkov, Corresponding Members E.B. Bekmakhanov, G.F. Dachshleiger, B.S. Suleimenov.
A prominent role in the development of the historical science of sovereign Kazakhstan and in the elaboration of priority scientific directions belongs to Academicians of the NAS R.K. M.K. Kozybayev, B.A. Tulepbayev, M.Kh. Assylbekov, O.I. Ismagulov, K.N. Nurpeis. An important role in the establishment and formation of the Institute, the determination of its scientific directions and the training of national cadres belongs to the institutes of the former Academy of Science of the USSR, Russian scholars: A.M. Pankratova, S. V. Bakhrushin, B. D. Grekov, N. M. Druzhinin, M.P. Vyatkin. From June 1988 to January 2002, the Director of the Institute was Academician of the National Academy of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan M.K. Kozybayev (1931-2002). Then, until 2006, the Director of the Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology was Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor M.K. Koigeldiev, one of the founders of the research school on the issues of the national liberation movement of the Kazakh people at the beginning of the XXth century: the Alash movement, Alash-Orda, and the national intelligentsia activities. In 2006-2007 the Director of the Institute was Doctor of Political Sciences, Professor Kamal Nizamovich Burkhanov, in 2008-2011 – Doctor of Historical Sciences Sattar Fazylovich Mazhitov. From 2011 to June 2017 the Institute was headed by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the NAS RK Khankeldy Makhmutovich Abzhanov.
Now the work of the Institute is managed by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Ziyabek Yermukhanovich Kabuldinov. The main content of the Institute’s work is the comprehensive development of the fundamental issues of the Homeland’s history, ethnology, anthropology, historiography, historical demography, and the introduction of new research methods. The results of research activity are reflected in numerous fundamental studies, monographs, documentary collections, textbooks, and in a number of legislative acts, directive documents of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
