APPROACH IN THE STUDY AND WRITING OF THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF
THE KAZAKH KHANATE: RESULTS AND PROSPECTS»

On March 6, 2023, a scientific conference «The role of an interdisciplinary approach in the
study and writing of the history and culture of the Kazakh Khanate: results and prospects» was
held. The conference was organized by the Republican Information Center for the Study of
Historical Materials at the R.B. Suleimenov Institute of Oriental Studies with the support of the
Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology.

The conference was organized as part of the project to develop an academic publication
«The History of Kazakhstan from ancient times to the present day» in seven volumes. Volume
IV «Kazakh Khanate (XV–beginning of XVIII centuries)».

The conceptual basis of the conference was an interdisciplinary approach to the study and
writing of the history and culture of the Kazakh Khanate. The interdisciplinary principle of the
study was considered in conjunction with the problems of source studies, which are basic for
carrying out any types of analytical work. During the conference, preliminary results of the
development of the IV volume «Kazakh Khanate (XV – early XVIII centuries)» were
announced: the researchers presented the results of the analysis of written Eastern, Western
European, Russian sources compared with data from archeology, ethnography, visual artifacts, as
well as oral historical tradition. The conference participants focused on the main stages of the
ethnic, social, political, economic and cultural history of the Kazakh people. Special attention
was paid to the study of spiritual and cultural heritage, interaction and mutual influence of
cultures on the Great Silk Road. The new approaches applied by the authors of the volume made
it possible to study the historical continuity and traditions of the Kazakh statehood, in particular,
the political, socio-economic, foreign policy and diplomatic relations of the Kazakh Khanate
with the countries of the East and West.

The reports were made by leading historians, orientalists, ethnographers, religious scholars
with unique research experience and who have made a great contribution to the study of the
history and culture of the Kazakh Khanate: Abuseitova M.Kh., Orazbayeva A.I., Sultangalieva
G.S., Kushkumbaev A.K., Nurtazina N.D., Isin A.I., Nogaibayeva M.S., Muzafarov R.R., etc.

The objectives of the scientific conference:
– comprehensive study and coverage by the largest Kazakh experts of the interdisciplinary
approach in the study and writing of the history and culture of the Kazakh Khanate;
– consolidation of global intellectual resources in order to develop recommendations that
contribute to the further dynamic development of Kazakhstan and strengthen its position on the
world stage.
