On July 19, 2024, the Department of Ancient and Medieval History of Kazakhstan and Neighboring Countries organized a seminar on the topic “The History of the Formation of the Current Ethnic Map of Northern Afghanistan.” The seminar was attended by T. Kydyr, Associate Professor and Candidate of Philological Sciences, a leading researcher at the M.O. Auezov Institute of Literature and Art; Zhabal Shoinbet, Director of the Abai Research Institute; Nurat Ilyas, General Director of the Institute for the Study of the History of Kazakhstan and Central Asia; M. Kadylbek, a young scholar from the Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology; as well as representatives of the intellectual community and the media.
During the seminar, there was a presentation of the book Kazakh of the Amu Darya: A Historical and Ethnographic Study by Zh.Zh. Zhenisuly, Deputy Director for International Relations and a leading researcher at the Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology, Candidate of Historical Sciences. Zh.Zh. Zhenisuly presented the results of his scientific expedition to Afghanistan, conducted in 2023-2024, and shared his research on the history, culture, economy, and current situation of the Kazakh population living in Afghanistan. He also highlighted the three phases of Kazakh migration to the region and the current state of the diaspora. The seminar participants asked questions and showed great interest in the topic.
