On January 20, 2025, the Sh. Sh. Ualikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology hosted a scientific seminar dedicated to the study of the activities of Muslim and Orthodox missionaries in Kazakhstan during the 19th – early 20th centuries.
The seminar marked an important stage in the implementation of a grant project, which includes the collection of unique documentary materials, writing articles for international scientific journals, and preparing a monograph addressing this significant aspect of history. During the event, key research findings were presented, and the main conclusions and achievements of the scientific work were discussed.
The participants of the seminar thoroughly examined the activities of religious preachers within the context of the political and social processes of that time. Special attention was given to the promotion of Orthodoxy and its role in the suppression of Islam in the Russian Empire. The research highlighted how missionary activities were integrated into the political strategy of the Russian Empire and how they influenced the development of the region’s religious landscape.
As part of the project, articles were published in high-ranking scientific journals, and materials from the international conference, which gathered leading specialists in the fields of history, religious studies, and ethnology, were also prepared and published.
The main outcome of the seminar was the publication of a collective monograph, which serves as an important source for the study of Kazakhstan’s history and the religious processes that occurred in the region during the specified period. This publication is a significant contribution to scientific heritage and can be valuable to both historians and religious scholars.
The seminar organizers express their gratitude to all participants and scholars for their active participation, interest, and contributions to the development of the research topic.
