On December 25, 2024, the VIII Republican Scientific and Practical Conference of Young Historians took place at the Sh. Sh. Ualikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology within the framework of the XII Nussupbekov Readings. The conference, dedicated to the 115th anniversary of Academician Akai Nussupbekov, was held under the theme “Young Scholars in Historical Science: Current State and Research Opportunities.”
The conference brought together doctoral candidates, master’s students, undergraduates, and young scholars from universities and research institutions across the country, including KazNU named after Al-Farabi, KazNPU named after Abai, ENU named after L.N. Gumilyov, ZKU named after M. Utemisov, YKU named after M. Auezov, VKU named after S. Amanzholov, the International University of Astana, Aktobe Regional University named after K. Zhubanov, and others.
The moderators of the plenary session were Shamek Bayanovich Tleubaev, Deputy General Director for Scientific Work of the Sh. Sh. Ualikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology, PhD in History; Timur Akimkhanovich Apendiev, Head of the Department of Historical Demography, PhD, Associate Professor; and Araylim Nurbolatovna Konkabaeva, Chairperson of the Young Scholars Council.
The opening remarks of the conference were delivered by Ziyabek Ermukhanovich Kabuldinov, General Director of the Sh. Sh. Ualikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, and Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan. In his speech, Ziyabek Ermukhanovich emphasized the continuing generational succession in the academic legacy of Academician Akai Nussupbekov and provided insights into the ongoing scientific work at the Institute. He also praised the work of the Young Scholars Council and wished young scholars creative success in their research endeavors.
The first speaker of the plenary session was Svetlana Gennadievna Beloous, Senior Lecturer at KazNPU named after Abai. Her presentation focused on the methods of studying oral history in the formation of Kazakhstan’s historical memory. The next speaker, doctoral student Abylai Kopbergenovich Tolegenov from ENU named after L.N. Gumilyov, discussed the contribution to the development of the local region through an analysis of the life and legacy of Karshyk Jalimbetov, a horticultural official in the Kyzylorda region. Jibek Turarbekovna Baykash, a research associate at the Archive of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, highlighted the memories of Kazakh prisoners of war from the Second World War preserved in archival collections. In addition, second-year doctoral student of KazNU named after Al-Farabi, Aizhan Askhatovna Doskaraeva, presented her research on Kazakh-Bukhara relations in the first quarter of the 18th century based on the available historical sources. Several other young scholars also shared the results of their research during the plenary session.
A unique feature of the conference format was the awarding of prizes to young scholars for their research efforts (articles). From 40 submissions received by the organizing committee, and after the assessment of independent experts, the following awards were given:
- 1st place: Abylai Kopbergenovich Tolegenov
- 2nd place: Svetlana Gennadievna Beloous
- 3rd place: Aizhan Askhatovna Doskaraeva
The conference provided a valuable platform for young researchers to present their work, exchange ideas, and gain recognition for their contributions to the field of historical science. It also showcased the continuous development and promising future of historical research in Kazakhstan, while honoring the academic legacy of Academician Akai Nussupbekov.
