Dear colleagues!

The Institute of History and Ethnology named after Sh.Sh. Valikhanov informs that on February 12, 2025, it will hold a scientific seminar on the topic “Enlightenment Activities of Public Organizations in Kazakhstan in the First Quarter of the 20th Century” with the aim of familiarizing with the results of the grant-funded project.

The main goal of the project is to uncover the history of the creation and activities of public organizations focused on scientific and educational work in Kazakhstan in the early 20th century. The study examines key aspects of their activities and their significance for the development of enlightenment and scientific research during the Soviet period. The significant achievements of the project include:

  • A detailed account of the creation and work of public organizations, such as the Orenburg, Kyzylorda, and Almaty periods, based on archival data.
  • Determining the composition of members, governing bodies, charters, and sources of funding of the organizations.
  • Analyzing the cultural and educational directions of scientific societies and their influence on the formation of research schools.
  • Researching archival data on the activities of the Tashkent society “Tala” and other cultural initiatives that played an important role in the enlightenment activities.
  • Assessing the role of public foundations in the formation of the national intelligentsia in Kazakhstan during the Soviet period.

To validate the research results, a republican scientific and practical conference titled “Enlightenment of the Kazakh Intelligentsia in the First Quarter of the 20th Century: Activities and History” was held, and the conference materials were published. Additionally, articles were published in peer-reviewed journals indexed in international databases, and a collective monograph titled “The History of Public Organizations Engaged in Enlightenment Activities in Kazakhstan in the 1920s-1930s” (Almaty: IP “Raduga”, 2023) was prepared.

We invite scholars, specialists, doctoral students master’s students and undergraduates are invited to participate in the scientific seminar to gain a more detailed understanding of the project’s results.
