INSTITUTE OF HISTORY AND ETHNOLOGY NAMED AFTER SH.SH. UALIKHANOV
INFORMATION LETTER
On March 31, 2025, the Institute of History and Ethnology after Ch.Ch. Valikhanov hosted a scientific seminar on the topic: “The Traditional Economy and Culture of the Kazakhs in the First Decades of Soviet Power: Inertial Development, Destruction, and Consequences (Historical and Ethnological Research)”. The seminar was dedicated to presenting the results of a grant-funded research project aimed at studying the cultural development, the destruction of the Kazakh nomadic economy, and the forced adaptation of culture to the conditions imposed by the totalitarian regime during the first decades of Soviet power (1920s–1930s).
Key Points Discussed:
– The development of traditional Kazakh economy and culture in the 1920s under the cautious initial reforms of Soviet power.
– The period of destruction of the traditional economy and culture, and the implementation of new economic and cultural models (late 1920s – early 1930s).
– The forced cultural adaptation of the Kazakh ethnic group following the establishment of the collective farm system.
Research Outcomes:
A collective monograph “Essays on the History of the Traditional Structure of the Kazakhs in the First Soviet Decades” was published, aimed at specialists in 20th-century Kazakh history, ethnologists, cultural scientists, students, and other interested parties.
– Based on the research results, 8 articles were published, including 1 article in a peer-reviewed scientific journal indexed in international databases like Web of Science and Scopus, and 4 articles in peer-reviewed domestic publications with non-zero impact factors (recommended by SHEQAC).
The seminar provided an excellent opportunity for scientists, specialists, doctoral and master’s students, as well as researchers, to explore the research findings in more detail.
The Institute thanks all participants and contributors to the event.
