On May 14, 2025 the Ch. Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology held a scholarly seminar titled “Colonization in the Context of Studying the History of Kazakhstan: Concept, Content, Interpretations”. The event was conducted as part of the development of the seven-volume academic publication “History of Kazakhstan from Ancient Times to the Present Day”.
The moderator of the seminar was Yerzhan Muratovich Toraygyrov, Candidate of Historical Sciences and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute.
The following speakers presented:
- Saule Nassenovna Mamytova, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor at Astana IT University — “Kazakhstan at the Turn of the 19th–20th Centuries as a Colony of the Russian Empire”.
- Ziyabek Yermukhanovich Kabuldinov, Academician of NAS RK, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, General Director of the Institute — “Colonization in the Context of Studying the History of Kazakhstan: Concept, Content, Interpretations”.
- Dmitry Valentinovich Vasiliev, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor at Moscow City Pedagogical University — “Russian Presence in the Kazakh Steppe in the 18th–19th Centuries: From Colonial Administration to Administrative Assimilation”.
- Daniel Scarboro, PhD, Associate Professor at Nazarbayev University — “Orthodox Shrines in Central Asia”.
- Askar Mambetovich Dzhumashev, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Head of the History Department at the Karakalpak Research Institute for the Humanities — “Colonial Policy of Tsarist Russia Based on the History of Peoples of the Lower Amu Darya”.
The seminar was held in an online format via Zoom and was attended by historians and scholars from Kazakhstan, Russia, and Uzbekistan. A productive discussion followed the presentations.
