MINISTRY OF SCIENCE AND HIGHER EDUCATION
REPUBLIC OF KAZAKHSTAN
COMMITTEE OF SCIENCE
CH. VALIKHANOV INSTITUTE OF HISTORY AND ETHNOLOGY

Dear colleagues!
Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of history and ethnology is one of the oldest scientific institutions in the Republic. This year is celebrated a double anniversary: 80th anniversary since its foundation, as well as the 190th anniversary of the birth of Ch.Ch. Valikhanov – the great scientist of the Kazakh people. The Institute traversed a great path and today it continues to make a huge contribution to the development of Kazakh science, conducting various research projects, implementing them within the framework of both targeted financing programs and grant projects of the Committee of Science of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
On September 5, 2025 at 11:00, the Ch. Valikhanov Institute of history and ethnology is holding an international scientific and practical conference on the topic «Everyday life of small and single-industry towns of Independent Kazakhstan: problems and perspectives» under the project GF AR23488712 «Everyday life of small and single-industry towns of Independent Kazakhstan (on the example of the Eastern region)» with the financial support of the Science Committee of Science of the Ministry Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Cities, possessing huge scientific and production potentials, are centers of innovative, technological, and cultural ties of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The competitiveness of the Kazakh economy and the image of the country largely depend on the effective use of this potential, the correct definition of the strategy and directions of urban development.
The cities of the Republic of Kazakhstan have a unique history of formation, including periods of origin, growth, prosperity and certain periods of stagnation. In retrospect, these processes show the development of the entire republic, and allow to trace impact of socio-economic downturns and the country-wide upswings. The study of the historical past of small and single-industry towns, consideration of modern socio-economic and demographic challenges is an important area of research by domestic scientists.
Each small and single-industry city is characterized by a specific spectrum and rhythm of daily life of citizens, the peculiarities of geographical location and economic specialization, and the possibilities of growth prospects. They intertwine the uniqueness of their origin and the patterns of common urban development features, as well as preserve their distinctive national and cultural appearance. All this definitely makes the study of various aspects of the history, economy and culture of the cities of independent Kazakhstan one of the relevant directions of the scientific community of the country. The cities of Kazakhstan are not without many economic, infrastructural, socio-demographic problems that require new research by historians, economists, demographers, political scientists, sociologists and cultural scientists.
In order to solve the complex problems of cities, the country’s leadership is trying to create conditions for their economic, social and cultural development in order to transform cities into sustainable self-developing administrative units by activating their own economic opportunities in combination with a policy of selective support for depressed cities. The country’s scientists should also make a significant contribution to the study and solution of these problems. Modern research should help to assess both the potential of mono- and small towns, formed during historical processes, and determine the prospects for their further development within the country, forming priorities for regional and public administration.
In this regard, the conference will address a range of modern problems, as well as issues of interaction between scientists from various industries and government agencies, the implementation of government programs for urban development, and innovative ideas, achievements, and prospects for urbanization in general.
The conference organized by the Institute covers a wide range of issues. The following working areas of the conference are proposed:
– Actual problems of urban development in modern research;
– Government programs for urban development and their implementation;
– Demographic and urban processes in Kazakhstan and abroad;
– Small and single-industry towns of Kazakhstan features and development prospects
