Dear colleagues!

On November 24, 2025, the Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology will hold the 1st International Scientific Forum «The Legacy of Chokan Valikhanov and Modern Approaches to the Study of the History and Ethnology of Central Asia», dedicated to the 190th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding scholar, traveler, and ethnographer Chokan Valikhanov.

The aim of the forum is a comprehensive study and popularization of the scientific heritage of Chokan Valikhanov, as well as the stimulation of new research in the field of the history and ethnology of Central Asia.

Chokan Valikhanov is a prominent figure in the history and ethnology of Central Asia. His works on the culture, history, and ethnography of the peoples of the region remain highly relevant for contemporary researchers.

Starting from 2025, the Ch. Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology plans to make this scientific forum an annual event. Dedicated to the life and work of the great Kazakh scholar, folklorist, geographer, and traveler Chokan Chingisovich Valikhanov, the event is aimed at strengthening academic cooperation and stimulating knowledge exchange among researchers of history and ethnology from both near and far abroad. This forum will serve as a scientific platform for discussing modern approaches, sharing experience and best practices, as well as identifying promising research directions focused on the current issues of the Central Asian region.

The proposed format will help to popularize the legacy of Chokan Valikhanov, drawing attention to his invaluable contribution to science and culture, and to the broader context of historical and ethnographic research.

The forum will include the following sections:

  • Section 1. Valikhanov Studies. Historical Heritage of Chokan Valikhanov.
  • Section 2. Ethnology and Monument Studies.
  • Section 3. New Approaches to the Study of the History and Ethnoculture of Kazakhstan and the Peoples of Central Asia.
  • Section 4. Turkology and Oriental Studies.

We are confident that this event will serve as a platform for the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and experience, and will also deepen the understanding of Chokan Valikhanov’s legacy and his contribution to science. A collection of the forum’s proceedings is planned for publication.

Scholars, researchers, university professors, doctoral and master’s students from both near and far abroad are invited to participate in the forum.

Articles should be no longer than 10 pages of typed text in electronic format. Font: Times New Roman, size – 14 pt; line spacing – single; justified alignment; paragraph indent – 1 cm; page orientation – portrait; margins: top and bottom – 2.0 cm, left – 3.0 cm, right – 1.0 cm.

Title formatting (uppercase, bold, centered): ARTICLE TITLE; Next line (bold italic, right-aligned): Full Name; Next line (italic, right-aligned): academic title, academic degree, position, place of work, city; Next line (italic, right-aligned): email for contact; One line below – the article text. References in the text should refer to the corresponding source in the reference list using Arabic numerals in square brackets, e.g., [1, p. 277]. Automatic footnotes are not allowed.

A summary should be provided at the end of the article: in Kazakh and English – for articles in Russian; in Russian and English – for articles in Kazakh.

The manuscript should be accompanied by author information, including full name, academic degree, title, place of work and position, city, country, postal and email addresses, and contact phone numbers.

  • Please ensure the text is free of spelling, punctuation, and stylistic errors.

The Organizing Committee reserves the right to select articles that meet the declared topics and formatting requirements.
