Dear colleagues!
Institute of History and Ethnology named after Ch.Ch. Valikhanov of the Science Committee of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan October 22, 2025 (date and venue may be subject to change!) invites you to participate in the Republican scientific and practical conference (hereinafter referred to as the Conference) on the topic: “The history of the fates and stay of Kazakhstani prisoners of war in fascist concentration camps on the territory of Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic countries.”
Servicemen from Kazakhstan took an active part in the Second World War, their fates were different. Some of them, winning victories, reached Berlin, others died on the battlefield, a certain part was forced to experience all the hardships of fascist captivity for various reasons before their liberation. Many of the prisoners of war were placed in concentration camps in various European countries, including Poland and the territories of the USSR republics occupied by Nazi Germany. Their fate, which developed during the Second World War, requires its own study, as new declassified sources appear, surviving prisoners of war left their memories, and relatives of deceased concentration camp prisoners are still looking for their great-grandfathers. In this regard, it is necessary to study the history of Kazakhstani prisoners of war, the geography of concentration camps by country, the living conditions of prisoners of war who found themselves in fascist captivity and were kept in inhumane conditions in concentration camps, as well as the problems of surviving prisoners of concentration camps regarding their repatriation to their homeland and problems associated with their rehabilitation.
The purpose of the conference – studying the history of Kazakh prisoners of war in fascist concentration camps in Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic countries, identifying common and specific features of the existence of prisoners of war, strengthening scientific cooperation, and creating a platform for scientific dialogue between researchers from the republic and foreign countries.
The Conference will focus on the following areas of issues:
• national, social, regional origin, age, number and other personal data of Kazakh prisoners of war in concentration camps located on the territory of Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic countries;
• geography of burial sites of Kazakh prisoners of war from fascist concentration camps on the territory of Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic countries, the state and possibilities of perpetuating their memory;
