The Institute of History and Ethnology named after Sh. Sh. Ualikhanov, through the Department of the History of Kazakhstan and Adjacent Countries in Antiquity and the Middle Ages, will hold a scientific seminar on April 28, 2026, entitled: “Ancient Historical Sources Related to Tamga Studies”
The purpose of the seminar is to provide a scholarly analysis, based on ancient historical sources, of the origin of tamga, the stages of its development and use, as well as its social and clan significance. In addition, the seminar will address the source-critical study of traditional tamga systems among Turkic and Mongolian peoples, offer a comparative analysis of tamgas based on written, archaeological, and ethnographic materials, and highlight the historical role and significance of tamgas.
In contemporary humanities, especially in the study of nomadic civilizations and traditional clan-based systems of governance, tamga studies are regarded as an important source of evidence. Therefore, it is essential to emphasize the high relevance of incorporating tamga-related data into current scholarly research.
