The Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology of the Committee on Science, Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, invites you to participate in the international scientific-practical conference: «History of Kazakhstan’s regions: archival sources, oral history and folkloric heritage»
The conference is held within the framework of the program-targeted funding project « nterdisciplinary Studies of Regional Aspects of the History of Kazakhstan (Based on New Archival Materials and Folklore Works)» of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan (registration number BR28512385).
The purpose of the conference is to conduct a comprehensive study of the regional aspects of Kazakhstan’s history based on new archival materials, oral history, and folklore heritage; to introduce new historical sources into academic circulation; and to promote the development of interdisciplinary approaches in contemporary historical scholarship.
The conference will address the following topics:
- Socio-political history of Kazakhstan’s regions;
- New archival documents and historical sources;
- Folkloric heritage as a source for the history of Kazakhstan;
- Oral history and historical memory;
- Ethno cultural processes and local communities;
- Interdisciplinary methods in historical research;
- Demographic and cultural changes in the history of Kazakhstan;
- History of everyday life and regional identity;
- History of local elites and distinguished historical figures;
- Contemporary approaches and research by young scholars.
Historians, ethnologists, folklorists, archivists, university lecturers, research fellows, doctoral candidates, postgraduate students, young scholars, as well as representatives of archival and cultural institutions are invited to participate.
Remote participation is available for authors from other cities.
If necessary, the conference proceedings will be sent to participants in electronic format (PDF).
The conference will be held in both offline and online formats.

The Organizing Committee intends to publish the proceedings volume prior to the conference. To be included in the conference program, participants must submit to the Organizing Committee or send to the Committee’s email address the participant registration form (see Appendix). Only carefully prepared and edited papers are accepted for publication. Materials submitted for publication must strictly comply with the following requirements: the paper text (minimum 5 pages and maximum 16 pages) must be submitted in Kazakh, Russian, or English; the registration form must be prepared in the MS Word text editor; the file name, as well as separate image files in JPEG format, must be named after the author’s surname.
REQUIREMENTS FOR FORMATTING MATERIALS
- Tables, charts, and figures must have titles and be prepared using Microsoft Office programs.
- Page format: A4.
- Margins: top – 2 cm, bottom – 2 cm, right – 1 cm, left – 3 cm.
- Font: Times New Roman or KZ Times New Roman, point – 12.
- Line spacing – single.
- Paragraph indent – 1.0 cm.
- The author’s (authors’) surname and initials should be centered and written in lowercase letters in bold type.
- Below this, the academic degree, academic title (if applicable), position of the author, and the full name of the organisation in which they work are to be indicated.
- After the author information, the title of the paper should be centered and written in CAPITAL LETTERS (BOLD TYPE).
- After a paragraph indent and one line space, the text of the paper (article) should be placed.
- The list of references (and sources) should be placed at the end of the article and arranged in the order in which the works are mentioned. References in the text should be indicated in square brackets according to the reference list, for example: [1, с. 2], [1, 2-б.] or [1, p. 2]. All bibliographic information must be carefully verified.
- All figures and photographs must have good contrast and a resolution of at least 300 dpi. All figures must be numbered and provided with captions. Figure captions should be concise but informative. Tables must be clear, have titles, and include a serial number. If the text contains only one table or one figure, numbering is not required. All tables and figures must be referenced in the text. Tables and figures should be placed directly in the relevant parts of the text.
- Abbreviations of words are not allowed except for generally accepted ones. Abbreviations should only be introduced after the full term has been mentioned for the first time in the text (e.g., National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan – NAS RK).
- Notes should be indicated by superscript numbers and numbered consecutively. The texts of the notes should be placed at the end of the article under the section NOTES and should also be numbered consecutively with superscript numbers. Footnotes at the bottom of pages are not permitted. If the article contains both NOTES and REFERENCES AND SOURCES, then after the main text, NOTES should appear first, followed by the REFERENCES section.
- Standardisation of notation: quotation marks – « »; centuries in dates are denoted by Roman numerals, years by Arabic numerals. A distinction must be made between a hyphen (-) and an en dash (–). The latter is used to denote numerical and chronological ranges, etc.: pp. 89–92; 179–185; 1878–1879; 15th–16th centuries (without qualification), or late 15th – early 16th centuries (with qualification); 7–8 km; and so forth.
- The use of tabulation, spaced text formatting, automatic commands, macros, and saving the text as a template is NOT PERMITTED.
- The file name must include the author’s surname (for text files: Omarova_application.doc, Omarova_article.doc; for illustrations: Omarova_fig1.jpeg).
The Editorial Board reserves the right to reject articles that do not comply with the formatting requirements (see Sample below).

- Acceptance of registration forms and presentation materials for inclusion in the conference proceedings – until 05 August 2026;
- Publication of the conference program – 10 August 2026;
- Publication of the conference proceedings – until 17 August 2026.
TRAVEL EXPENSES
Expenses related to travel and accommodation of participants are to be covered by the participants’ own expense.
