From 7 to 11 July 2026, Ziyabek Yermukhanuly Kabyldinov, Director General of the Ch. Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology under the Science Committee of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, together with Seithan Shynarbek, Research Fellow of the Institute, paid a working visit to Mongolia.
During the visit, the delegation held meetings with Academician S. Chuluun, Director of the Chinggis Khaan National Museum, and Dr. Ch. Munkhtuul (PhD), Director of the International Institute for the Study of Nomadic Civilizations (IISNC) under the auspices of UNESCO.
The primary purpose of the visit was to discuss the implementation of the Memorandum of Cooperation signed between the Ch. Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology and the Chinggis Khaan National Museum on 21 April 2026, within the framework of the official meeting between the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and the President of Mongolia, Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh, held during the State Visit of the President of Mongolia to Kazakhstan.
During the negotiations, the parties reached agreements on the implementation of several joint initiatives, including:
- launching joint research projects with the Chinggis Khaan National Museum;
- establishing the Association of Historians of Kazakhstan and Mongolia in September 2026;
- organizing a joint roundtable discussion in Almaty as part of the Association’s inaugural events;
- jointly preparing and publishing a collection of newly identified historical documents and archival sources related to the history of the Kazakh Khanate and the Dzungar State;
- conducting collaborative research on the history and traditional culture of nomadic peoples, as well as preparing joint scholarly publications and monographs.
As part of the visit, a Memorandum of Cooperation in the Field of Scientific Research was also signed between the Ch. Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology and the International Institute for the Study of Nomadic Civilizations (IISNC) under the auspices of UNESCO.
The Memorandum was signed on 8 July 2026 by Professor Ziyabek Yermukhanuly Kabyldinov, Director General of the Institute, and Dr. Ch. Munkhtuul (PhD), Director of the International Institute for the Study of Nomadic Civilizations.
The International Institute for the Study of Nomadic Civilizations (IISNC) was established in 1998 in Ulaanbaatar with the support of UNESCO and is one of the world’s leading international research institutions dedicated to the study of the history and culture of nomadic civilizations.
The Memorandum provides for cooperation in the following areas:
- developing joint research projects aimed at studying and promoting the traditional culture and values of nomadic peoples;
- conducting collaborative research on equestrian culture, traditional livestock breeding, and the processing and sustainable use of livestock products;
- jointly studying the history and cultural heritage of nomadic peoples in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Mongolia, as well as exchanging scholarly materials and historical sources;
- organizing international scientific conferences dedicated to the study of nomadic civilizations;
- implementing joint international research projects.
The agreements reached during the visit mark an important step toward strengthening academic cooperation between Kazakhstan and Mongolia and will contribute to expanding joint research in the fields of history, archaeology, ethnology, and the cultural heritage of the nomadic civilizations of Eurasia.
