Biography Born on October 1, 1964, in Shagantogay, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), People’s Republic of China. In 1982, he graduated from secondary school. Since 1996, he has been residing in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Education: Higher education

From 1982 to 1984, he studied at the preparatory department with advanced Chinese language training at the Central University for Nationalities (Beijing). From 1984 to 1988, he graduated from the Faculty of History of the same university with a degree in History.

Academic degree: In 2010, he defended his Candidate of Historical Sciences dissertation on the topic “The Kerei Khanate in Chinese Sources (10th–13th centuries).”

Professional experience:

Since 2022, he has been working as a Leading Research Fellow at the Ch. Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan and serves as the Head of the Department of Ancient and Medieval History of Kazakhstan and Neighboring Countries.

From 2006 to 2022, he worked at the R. B. Suleimenov Institute of Oriental Studies of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan as a Research Fellow, Senior Research Fellow, and Leading Research Fellow, and also served as Acting Head of Department.

From 2004 to 2009, he worked as a Research Fellow at the Institute of Kazakh Civilization and History of Kainar University.

From 1997 to 2000, he studied as a postgraduate researcher at the Ch. Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

In September 1996, he moved to his historical homeland, Kazakhstan.

From 1988 to 1996, he worked at the “Nationalities” Publishing House in Beijing as a translator and editor in Kazakh and Chinese.

Awards and honors:

In 2024, Zhanymkhan Oshan was awarded the badge of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan “For Contributions to the Development of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.”

By the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated December 2, 2021, he was awarded the commemorative medal “30 Years of Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan.”

In 2021, he received the Honorary Certificate of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan “For Contributions to the Development of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.”

In 2014, he was awarded the badge of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan “For Contributions to the Development of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.”

In 2012, he received a letter of appreciation from the Akim of Almaty for his “Significant contribution to the socio-economic development, culture, and arts of the city of Almaty since the declaration of independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan and return to the historical homeland.”

In 2012, he also received a letter of appreciation from the World Association of Kazakhs “For contributions to the study of the history of Kazakhs worldwide and the development of Kazakhstani Oriental studies.”

Research interests: The Turkic period, the Mongol era, Chinese archival documents related to the history of the Kazakhs (18th–20th centuries), correspondence of Kazakh khans and sultans in the Chagatai language with neighboring states, ancient Turkic archaeology, textology, ethnography of nomadic peoples, and related fields. He has participated in 15 scientific research projects

Publications: uthor of approximately 100 scholarly works published in domestic and international journals. Author of two individual monographs and contributor to 24 collective monographs and document collections. He has also published about five articles and review papers in high-ranking international journals indexed in Scopus.
