Report on the Scientific and Organizational Work Carried Out in 2025 by the Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology

The plan for the scientific and organizational work of the Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology was approved on January 16, 2025. It also included a number of assignments received from the Science Committee. In 2025, a number of anniversary dates were marked at the national and international levels. These included the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet peoples in the Great Patriotic War, the international scientific and practical conference “The Contribution of Kazakhstan and Kazakhstanis to Victory,” the international scientific and practical conference “Historical Memory and National Identity” held within the framework of the Nurpeis Readings to mark the 90th anniversary of the prominent historian Academician Kenes Nurpeis, as well as the First International Scientific Forum “The Legacy of Shokan Ualikhanov and Contemporary Approaches to the Study of the History and Ethnology of Central Asia,” dedicated to the 190th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding scholar, traveler, and ethnographer Shokan Ualikhanov, held on November 25, 2025, among other commemorative dates. The institute’s departments were tasked with organizing and holding conferences devoted to these dates. In accordance with the assignments given, the departments successfully organized and held these conferences at a high level. We express our gratitude to the organizers for their work.

  • 1. To mark the 90th anniversary of the prominent historian Academician Kenes Nurpeis, the institute, jointly with the Kazakh National Women’s Teacher Training University, held the international scientific and practical conference “Historical Memory and National Identity” on March 14, 2025, within the framework of the Nurpeis Readings, as well as the international scientific and practical conference “National Historical Scholarship and the Issues of Continuity: Academic Research, New Views, and Approaches,” dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology.
  • 2. To mark the 30th anniversary of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan, on March 18, 2025, together with the Public Accord and Development Center of AO ISB MM, the institute held the round table “The Policy of Unity and Solidarity in Kazakhstan: Experience and Prospects” at the Atameken Historical and Cultural Center in the village of Shamalgan, Karasai District, Almaty Region (person responsible: T.A. Apendiyev, Department of Historical Demography).
  • 3. Together with Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the akimats of Almaty Region and Zhetisu Region, and the public association named after Samen Batyr, the institute held the international scientific and practical conference “The Struggle to Preserve the Integrity of the People and the Land: Historical Experience and Issues of Continuity” on May 6, 2025, dedicated to the 320th anniversary of the birth of Samen Batyr Danenuly. The institute served as the principal organizer.
  • 4. To mark the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet peoples in the Great Patriotic War, on May 6, 2025, the institute, together with the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Faculty of History of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, held the international scientific and practical conference “The Contribution of Kazakhstan and Kazakhstanis to Victory” (person responsible: K.V. Cherepanov, Department of the History of Kazakhstan in the 20th Century).
  • 5. To mark the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repression and Famine, observed on May 31, the international round table “Kazakhstan During the Period of Famine and Mass Political Repression. 1931-1938” was held on May 28, 2025 (person responsible: K.V. Cherepanov, Department of the History of Kazakhstan in the 20th Century).
  • 6. On August 8, 2025, together with the akimat of Raiymbek District of Almaty Region and the public foundation “Babalar men urpaqtar,” the institute held the national scientific and practical conference “Suyindik Bi and the Institution of Biys in Kazakh Society: History, Personalities, and Issues of Intergenerational Continuity.” The conference was held at the House of Culture in the village of Narynkol, Raiymbek District, Almaty Region.
  • 7. On September 5, 2025, the institute held the international scientific and practical conference “Everyday Life in Small Towns and Single-Industry Towns of Independent Kazakhstan: Problems and Prospects.”
  • 8. On September 16, 2025, the institute held the international scientific and practical conference “The State Activities of Abylai, Uali, and Bokey Khans: New Historical Evidence and Issues of Scholarly Interpretation.”
  • 9. To mark the 80th anniversary of the Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology, on September 26, 2025, the institute held the international scientific and practical conference “National Historical Scholarship and the Issues of Continuity: Academic Research, New Views, and Approaches.”
  • 10. On October 17, 2025, the Astana branch of the Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology and the Project Office of the State Commission held the national scientific and practical conference “The Revolutionary Doctrine of the ‘Little October’ in Kazakhstan: Its Political Goals and Methods of Implementation.”
  • 11. On October 23, 2025, the Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology held a round table dedicated to the national holiday Republic Day on the topic “On the Path to the State Sovereignty of Kazakhstan: Historical Experience and the Present Day.”
  • 12. On November 7, 2025, the round table “Imperial Discourse and Peasant Resettlement in the Kazakh Steppe: The Composition of Subjects and Object-Oriented Directions (Second Half of the 19th Century – 1917)” was held.
  • 13. To mark the 190th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding scholar, traveler, and ethnographer Shokan Ualikhanov, the First International Scientific Forum “The Legacy of Shokan Ualikhanov and Contemporary Approaches to the Study of the History and Ethnology of Central Asia” was held on November 25, 2025 (person responsible: G.A. Shotanova, Department of the History of Kazakhstan in the Modern Period).
  • 14. On December 23, 2025, within the framework of the 13th Nusupbekov Readings, the international scientific and practical conference “Academician Akai Nusupbekov and His Role in the Development of National Historical Scholarship and in the Establishment of the Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology” was held (person responsible: K.V. Cherepanov, Department of the History of Kazakhstan in the 20th Century).
  • 15. An international scientific and practical conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the distinguished Kazakhstani philosopher and scholar, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Philosophy, and Professor Dosmukhamed Kishibekov, was held on the topic “Issues of Philosophy, History, Civilization, and the Contemporary World in the Legacy of Academician Dosmukhamed Kishibekov” (person responsible: Zh. Oshan, Department of the History of Ancient and Medieval Kazakhstan and Adjacent Countries).
