CHOKAN VALIKHANOV INSTITUTE OF HISTORY AND ETHNOLOGY ESTABLISHED A CONNECTION WITH ZHUSUP BALASAGUN KYRGYZ NATIONAL UNIVERSITY: A “SUMMER SCHOOL” OF KAZAKH–KYRGYZ HISTORIANS WAS HELD


From the twenty-seventh of June to the first of July (27.06.2023-01.07.2023), a “Summer school” of Kazakh-Kyrgyz historians was held, organized by the Zhusup Balasagyn Kyrgyz National University and the Chokan Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology. On the twenty-seventh day, a scientific congress was opened at the Kyrgyz National University. The Congress was opened by Deputy of the Supreme Council of the Kyrgyz Republic Zhanarbek Kubanichovich Akaev. Zh.K. Akayev noted that it is necessary to increase Kazakh-Kyrgyz scientific ties, cooperation has been actively promoted for six months, Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Maulen Ashimbayev also visited Bishkek. Chairman of the Muras Foundation under the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Kiyas Sattarovich Moldokasymov told about Chokan Valikhanov, who recorded the epic “Manas Zhyry” for the first time, and made it clear that the friendship of Chingiz Aitmatov and Mukhtar Shakhanov, Zhambyl and Toktogul should be an example for us.

During the congress, the scholarship of the Chokan Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology was awarded to a student of the Balasagyn Kyrgyz National University by the Director of the Institute, Corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Professor Ziyabek Ermukhanovich Kabuldinov. The Director of the Institute also informed about the PCF, the progress of work on an academic multi-volume publication on the history of Kazakhstan and presented the Institute’s books as a gift to our Kyrgyz partners.

At the plenary session, Vice-rector of the Diplomatic Academy named after Kazy Dikambayev, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Zainidin Karpekovich Kurmanov, in his speech at the congress, noted that the Kazakh and Kyrgyz peoples had worked together for 3,000 years, the Kyrgyz intelligentsia was also part of the national liberation movement “Alash”, including he noted the merits of the Kyrgyz figure I. Zhainasova. Rector of the Kyrgyz National University named after Zhusup Balasagyn, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Tolobek Abylovich Abdrakhmanov thanked the guests of the congress and spoke about the development of historical science in modern Kyrgyzstan.

On the part of Kazakhstan, the director of the Institute of State History Burkitbay Gelmanovich Ayagan proposed to develop the integration of Kazakh-Kyrgyz historians, to conduct joint scientific research. As one of them, he said that a scientific collection on hunger was being prepared. Deputy Director for Science of the Chokan Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Shamek Bayanovich Tleubaev made a report on the uprising in 1916, making scientific conclusions based on archival sources that fateful, fraternal peoples bear a heavy burden in history. In addition, advisor to the director, K. I. Professor of the Institute Auezkhan Kadirzhanovich Shashaev made a report on the activities of the Kazakh-Kyrgyz intelligentsia in the Talap society.

Rector of the Kyrgyz National University, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, Doctor of Economics, Professor Abdrakhmanov Tolobek Abylovich in the final speech of the congress proposed to develop such areas of scientific research as “Manastanu”, “Shokhan studies”. He also shared his opinion about today’s Kyrgyz diasporas. In conclusion, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Economics, Professor Kabuldinov Ziyabek Ermukhanovich received the title of honorary professor of the Kyrgyz National University named after Zhusup Balasagyn.

The summer school of Kazakh – Kyrgyz historians, held in Issyk-Kul, continued on June 27 (06/28/2023) in 2 sections. The moderator was Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Z. E. Kabuldinov, and from the Kyrgyz side – Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Turatbek Toktobekovich Syrdybaev, Director of the Institute of History of the New Region of the Kyrgyz National University named after Zhusup Balasagyn. The director of our Institute, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Z. E. Kabuldinov presented the delegation of scientists who arrived at the congress. Speeches at the second breakout session were started by the head of the Department of the History of Kazakhstan of modern times, leading researcher, Candidate of Historical Sciences Shotanova Galiya Aitzhanovna on the topic “Kazakhs in the Bokei Horde: modernization of traditional society”, senior researcher of this department Rashid Yeshenovich Orazov presented a report with archival data on the topic “Political activity of the Alash intelligentsia of the Semirechye beginning XX century.” Topics were discussed, opinions were expressed on historical and cultural values common to the two fraternal countries. A group of young scientists of the Chokan Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology established contacts with young Kyrgyz historians. Advisor to the Director of the Institute, PhD Olzhas Bekenovich Kuanbai raised the topic “The importance of foreign languages in presenting our history to the world: effective and fast ways of learning” and shared his thoughts with the youth.

On the twenty-ninth of June (06/29/2023), the third section continued its work at the boarding house in Bostery. The moderators gave the floor to the researcher of the Department of the History of Kazakhstan of modern Times of the Chokan Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology, Chairman of the Council of Young Scientists Aman Dauletovich Kunekeev. A.D. Kunekeev told about the historical and cultural sphere of the Kyrgyz-Kazakh brotherhood. He performed kui – Kozheke Nazarula’s “Bes zhorga”, Nurgisa Tlendiev’s “Alkissa”, which went down in history. As Chairman of the Council of Young Scientists A.D. Kunekeev called on the Kyrgyz youth for joint scientific contacts, shared plans on how to organize a “Summer school” for the next year. Junior researcher of the Department of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Institute of History and Ethnology named after Chokan Valikhanov, PhD student Dosymbetov Nurlybek Aidarbekovich shared interesting information about the opening of the Kazakh Center of Monument Studies in the field of ethnology, expeditions of the Department of Ethnology to such states as Mongolia and Uzbekistan. On the part of Kyrgyzstan, Master’s student B.S. Borgemikov spoke about the national types of games and the history of kokpar. In addition, Kyrgyz scientists have revealed the philosophical essence of understanding the Sufi tradition, the role of Kambar-ata in the Kyrgyz worldview.

In continuation of the scientific congress, on June 30, the youth was also given the floor. A junior researcher at the Institute, A.S. Tylakhmetova, noted on the basis of archival data the historical connection and brotherhood of the two countries. The scientific secretary of the Institute Kurmanalina N.N. said that the connection of Kazakh-Kyrgyz historians can be realized through scientific projects. In addition, Kurmanalina N.N. She told about the preparation of a seven-volume academic publication on the history of Kazakhstan, about special attention to young scientists of the Chokan Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology, where young people under the age of forty can present their projects and go on scientific trips and expeditions, and also called on young Kyrgyzstanis to joint scientific cooperation.

Following the results of the Summer School, both sides made the following specific proposals:

Identification of data on the Kazakh-Kyrgyz intelligentsia in foreign archives;

Joint writing of articles by Kazakh-Kyrgyz scientists and conducting research;

To conduct comparative studies on the similarities and differences of the traditional culture of the Kyrgyz and Kazakhs as a direction of scientific ethnographic research;

Сreate a common scientific base of historians;

Publication of a collection of proverbs common among the Kyrgyz-Kazakh peoples;

Implementation of the exchange of undergraduates and doctoral students of Kyrgyz-Kazakh universities;

Organization of scientific internships and excursions jointly by the two countries;

Start preparing Kazakh-Kyrgyz archival materials and introduce the exchange of documents into scientific circulation;

Presentation of joint projects discussed;

Proposals have been made to attract Kyrgyz scientists to participate in the competition of scientific projects in Kazakhstan;

Conducting joint scientific conferences;

It was said that a representative office of the Kyrgyz National University named after Jusup Balasagyn will be opened on the basis of the Institute;

It was discussed how to organize the next “Summer School”.
