Ch.Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology will be held an International Scientific and Practical Conference on 12 October 2023 on the topic: “Problems of researching the famine of the early 20s of the XX century in Kazakhstan and adjacent territories: causes, scale and historical consequences” The conference is held with the financial support of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan as part of the implementation of the project IRN AR09259227.

In modern historiography, research on the problem of famine in Kazakhstan in the early 1920s and its consequences is becoming relevant. Until now, both in domestic and foreign historiography, all aspects of the famine in Kazakhstan in the early 1920s have not been fully studied. All documents from regional and foreign archives about the famine, articles and reports in periodicals of that time, giving various information about the famine are not yet known to a wide range of readers. In particular, researchers are faced with the task of developing theoretical and methodological approaches to studying the causes of famine, the specifics of providing assistance to the hungry by official authorities and foreign organizations, studying the fate of refugees and street children, determining the number of victims and victims, participants in popular uprisings and resistance during the famine, a comprehensive study of the activities of central and local commissions to help the hungry and combat the consequences of famine.

Main directions of the conference:

– theoretical and methodological foundations of the study, new sources and historiography on the famine in Kazakhstan at the beginning of the 20th century;

– the causes and scale of the famine of the early 1920s in the KASSR, the Turkestan ASSR and other regions of the RSFSR: general features and characteristics;

– demographic losses of the population and problems of refugee, child homelessness during the famine of the early 1920s in Kazakhstan;

– popular protests and uprisings in Kazakhstan and Siberia during the famine of the early 1920s;

– measures to combat hunger and its consequences in Kazakhstan and the participation of foreign and other organizations in providing assistance to the hungry;

– political, socio-economic and ethnocultural consequences of the famine of the early 1920s in Kazakhstan and adjacent territories.

Working languages of the conference: Kazakh, Russian, English.

Based on the results of the conference, it is planned to publish a collection of materials. Applications for participation in the conference are accepted until October 10, and texts of articles for inclusion in the collection of materials until October 18 in electronic form marked “Hunger Conference” by e-mail: rbaidali@mail.ru and bek.alma_81@mail.ru.

Requirements for the formatting of materials: article volume – no more than 10-12 pages in the Microsoft Word editor; font Times New Roman, size 12; line spacing – single; paragraph – 1 cm, paragraph indentation is set automatically; margins: top and bottom – 2, left – 3, right – 1.5. The full name of the author, place of work (name of organization) should be indicated in the right corner. The title of the report in capital letters is placed below the center, city, and country. References to sources should be indicated in square brackets by serial number (for example, [1, p. 65]); the list of references used at the end of the article is numbered as they are mentioned in the text.

The organizing committee reserves the right to reject materials that do not correspond to the theme of the conference or the requirements.
